SFA To Play In 2014 Las Vegas Invitational

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin men’s basketball team will be one of eight teams to play in the 2014 Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational, being held Nov. 27-28 at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
“It is a first class event at a first class venue in a city that has obviously turned into a basketball hotbed,” head coach Brad Underwood said. “We are excited, as coaches, that our players get to be a part of it. It is going to be a great field that we will play in, with great coaches at the helms of each program.”
The Lumberjacks will face Prairie View A&M on Nov. 27 at 8 p.m. The other semifinal game in SFA’s bracket field has Austin Peay tilting with Brown at 1 p.m. The following day, the two winners will meet in the championship game at 4 p.m. with the consolation game to be played prior at 1:30 p.m.
The other bracket playing in the invitational features Baylor, Memphis, Illinois and Indiana State. Games between those teams are scheduled for 4 p.m. (Illinois vs. Indiana State) and 11 p.m. (Baylor vs. Memphis) on Nov. 27 and 7 p.m. (consolation game) and 9:30 p.m. (championship game) on Nov. 28. All four games of the bracket will be televised on Fox Sports 1.
Prior to arriving in Las Vegas each of the eight participating teams will play two games apiece, with the teams in the televised bracket serving as hosts. The on-campus match-ups have yet to be announced.
Six of the eight teams in the Las Vegas Invitational made postseason appearances in 2014. The 'Jacks (Third Round) were joined by Memphis (Third Round) and Baylor (Sweet 16) in the NCAA Tournament, while Illinois and Indiana State received National Invitation Tournament (NIT) bids. Always one of the top early season tournaments of the college basketball season, the past champions of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational reads like a "Who's Who" of college basketball. UCLA, SFA's opposition in the third round of last season's Big Dance, was the 2013 champion. Other recent winners include Illinois (2005), Kansas (2006 and 2010), North Carolina (2007), Kentucky (2008) and Oklahoma State (2009). In the 2011 title game, UNLV upset No. 1 North Carolina 90-80. Creighton won in 2012.
Hosting more than 200 events each year, the Orleans Arena is located just west of the Las Vegas strip and was recently named the No. 1 mid-size arena in the USA by Venues Today magazine.
