June 24, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin head men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood announced Monday the addition of Erik Pastrana as the final piece of his first coaching staff, joining assistants Michael Boynton and Stephen Gentry.
Pastrana joins SFA after spending the past year as an assistant at Northwest Florida State College, helping lead the Raiders to a 30-4 record and all the way to the 2013 NJCAA Championship Game where they fell to College of Central Florida.
“We’re very excited to be adding Erik to our staff,” Underwood said. “He’ll be joining two experienced coaches and will add a great dimension to our staff, especially in recruiting. Erik is one of the up and coming stars in our industry and has great ties to the Florida area. We feel strongly about his ability to bring talent here.”
In his one year with the Raiders, Pastrana helped develop Northwest Florida freshman Chris Jones to become an NJCAA first-team All-American, Panhandle Conference Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
Prior to Northwest Florida State, Pastrana spent one year as an assistant coach at Labette Community College in Parsons, KS. While with the Cardinals Pastrana was in charge of recruiting, planning practice, game management, scouting opponents and film exchange.
Pastrana got his coaching start while attending Kansas St. where he was a graduate assistant from 2007-09 with Underwood and Frank Martin. During his first season the Wildcats went 21-12 and recorded a third-place finish in the Big 12 with a mark of 10-6 in league contests, marking the program's best finish since the inception of the league. The squad advanced to the NCAA Tournament, earning its first NCAA Tournament victory since the 1988 campaign.
The Wildcats then followed up that campaign by earning an at-large bid to the NIT during the 2008-09 season.
In between coaching stops, Pastrana also coach two different AAU teams, including the KC Run GMC (Under Armour sponsored) in 2012. While there Pastrana helped coach and mentor young student-athletes and helped prepare them to move on to the college level. He also was a coach for the Florida Rams (Adidas sponsored) from 2010-11.
Pastrana earned his Master’s degree in 2009 at Kansas St. and his Bachelor’s in 2007 at Florida State.
