NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin basketball coach Danny Kaspar announced Tuesday the addition of Doug Nichols to the Lumberjack coaching staff for the 2009-10 season. Nichols, a former graduate assistant at SFA, returns to the men's hoops staff after a one-year stint as an assistant at nearby Angelina College.

"I feel very fortunate to get Doug back on our staff," Kaspar said. "He worked with us for two years as a graduate assistant and brought us some great ideas from his previous job as a student assistant at Texas A&M. Doug and I have known each other for a long time, and I think he has a good feel for what I expect of my assistants. I think this transition should be an easy one for both of us."

In his year with the Roadrunners, Nichols served as the program's recruiting coordinator and academic coordinator. His on-court focus centered on defense and post play.

"I believe Doug gained some valuable recruiting experience while he was at Angelina," Kaspar said. "Coach [Todd] Neighbors had him recruit all over Louisiana, and I am going to ask him to continue to do that for us. Doug is familiar with a lot of high school and AAU coaches in Louisiana, and that should help us in our efforts to get some players out of that state."

In his two years with the 'Jacks as a graduate assistant, Nichols had a hand in all aspects of the program. His primary responsibilities included scouting, player evaluation, film exchange, travel planning, maintenance of the recruiting database, and academic support and advising. Nichols also coordinated SFA's summer basketball camps.

Before coming to SFA, Nichols worked as an athletic assistant for basketball operations with the men's basketball program at Texas A&M. Serving under former Aggie head coach Billy Gillispie, Nichols assisted the A&M staff in all areas of the program's day-to-day operations. He also served as an assistant camp director with the Billy Gillispie Basketball Camps.

Nichols holds a bachelor of science in sport management from Texas A&M, completed in 2005. He obtained a master's degree in kinesiology from SFA in 2007.
