NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Tip-off Time: The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will tip off the 2007-08 regular season Friday night with a home game against Texas-Tyler. The contest is set for a 7 p.m. start from the William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA returns four starters and five lettermen in all from a solid 15-14 season in 2006-07. SFA is 4-3 in season openers under eighth-year head coach Danny Kaspar. The Lumberjacks are undefeated at 3-0 when opening the regular season at home and have won their first home game of the year in each of Kaspar's seven seasons at the helm. The last time an SFA team failed to win in its home opener was a 67-55 loss to Texas A&M in 1998.

Last Season: After an up-and-down start, the Lumberjacks got on a roll mid-season, winning six straight games, including a 4-0 start to Southland Conference play. But a hard-fought 55-52 loss to Sam Houston State on Jan. 18 stole SFA's momentum, and the Lumberjacks struggled to recover it. SFA went 4-7 over the last 11 games of the regular season and finished tied for third in the SLC West Division. The Lumberjacks went into the SLC Tourna-ment as the No. 6 seed and fell to No. 3 Northwestern State, 85-76.

SFA vs. Texas-Tyler: Friday's game against the Patriots will mark the first meeting between UT-Tyler and Stephen F. Austin. UT-Tyler is the only first-time opponent on this year's slate. Last year, the Lumberjacks' schedule featured the start of five new series.

The Patriots: Texas-Tyler competes in the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference. The school was founded in 1971, but its men's bas-ketball team is in only its fifth year of existence. UT-Tyler returns two start-ers and four lettermen from last year's 6-18 squad that finished last in the ASC East Division.

The Coaches: SFA is under the direction of head coach Danny Kaspar. Kaspar is in his eighth season at the helm for the Lumberjacks. He holds a record of 108-90 (.545) at SFA and has a 327-142 (.697) overall record in 16-plus seasons as a collegiate head coach. Texas-Tyler is coached by Kenny Bizot. Bizot is in his first season with the Patriots and his first year as a col-legiate head coach.

Up Next: SFA will host Jackson State Tuesday in the front half of a two-game season series with the Tigers. Tuesday's game is set for a 7:30 p.m. start in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Lumberjacks will then hit the road for one of their biggest tests of the season. SFA travels to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech of the Big 12 on Friday, Nov. 17. The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. tip from the United Spirit Arena.
