NACOGDOCHES, Texas -
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will play its exhibition opener Monday night, when the 'Jacks take on Northwestern Oklahoma State. The contest is set to tip at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
The Lumberjacks are 5-1 in their last six exhibition openers with the only loss coming in double-overtime against Texas A&M-Commerce in 2005. SFA did not play an exhibition game last season, and Monday's contest is the only one of the 2009-10 campaign.
The Lumberjacks are coming off a 24-8 season in 2008-09. SFA went 13-3 in Southland Conference play to capture a second straight SLC championship. The 'Jacks went on to take the Southland Tournament title and earn the program's first trip to the NCAA Championships.
But SFA returns just six players and two starters from that squad and will begin the 2009-10 season with eight newcomers.
Northwestern Oklahoma State went 20-12 last season and posted a 15-7 record in Sooner Athletic Conference play to finish tied for third. The Rangers are 1-0 this season, having opened the campaign with an 85-84 win over College of the Ozarks on Nov. 3.
Following Monday's exhibition, SFA will open the regular season on Nov. 16 with a road game against Minnesota.
