Haymon Named SLC POW
Dec. 9, 2013
FRISCO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin senior guard Desmond Haymon has been named the Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Haymon was the most valuable player of the Etech Lumberjack Classic after leading the Lumberjacks to a pair of wins in their home tournament. The native of Pickens, Miss. (Sullivan H.S.), helped SFA extend its home win streak to 22 games, averaging 19.5 points in just under 30 minutes per game. The 22-game home winning streak currently ranks second in the nation behind No. 24 Missouri and is tied with No. 8 Duke.
The senior recorded 18 points, with 14 coming in the second half, in a 79-69 win against Towson Friday night. He finished 5-of-10 from the field, including a 3-pointer, and connected on 7 of 11 shots at the free-throw line. Haymon then followed with a game-high 21 points in win over James Madison Saturday night to keep SFA unblemished at home since the 2011-12 season. The Lumberjack finished 6-of-9 from the field, with two buckets beyond the arc, and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe.
Through 10 games, Haymon has average 13.2 points and 3.5 rebound per game.
Haymon and SFA will next head to Denton, Texas, for a 1:00 tip with North Texas on Sunday, Dec. 15.
