HUNTSVILLE, Texas -
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team got out to another sluggish start that aided Sam Houston State as it rolled to a 52-24 victory over SFA Thursday night at Bowers Stadium. The `Jacks fall to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the Southland Conference in the set back.
Bearkat quarterback Phil Daugherty completed 14-of-23 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns, and Jason Godrey recorded 164 rushing yards on 16 carries as the Bearkats built a 31-3 first half advantage. SHSU finished the game with 512 yards of total offense.
Sophomore Danny Southall came on in relief for starter Zeke Dixon who struggled completing only 12 passes for 102 yards. Southall provided a small spark for SFA as he guided the `Jacks to three touchdown drives, outscoring SHSU 21-7 over the final 15:37 of the game but it was too little, too late as the `Jacks dropped their second straight conference game.
Southall finished the game 13-of-22 for 217 yards and two touchdowns. Southall hit sophomore Chance Dennis for an 18-yard strike in the third quarter. Dennis finished with one of the best games in school history, hauling in 14 catches for 194 yards. Southall's other TD pass went to senior Carl Price from six yards out. Sophomore Louie Runnels added the `Jacks final score on a one-yard plunge over the goal line.
Runnels led the `Jacks with 76 yards on 11 carries, including a career-best 51-yard scamper. Junior Jerome Brooks added 38 yards on 10 carries.
