NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks kept their Southland Conference title hopes alive Saturday night with a 28-16 win over Nicholls State on a rainy night in Homer Bryce Stadium. Quarterback Michael Williams threw touchdown passes of 49, 30 and 16-yards on the night in leading the Lumberjacks (6-4,3-1) to the win.

Two of Williams' touchdown passes came on fourth down plays as the 'Jacks converted on fourth and two on the first play of the fourth quarter from the Nicholls State 30-yard line to go up 21-10. Neither team could get much going in the second half on the rain soaked field until Williams again hooked up with Michael David on fourth and six for the Colonels' 16-yard line with 1:14 left to play to make the score 28-10.

On the kick-off, Chris Crawford raced 95-yards on the return for the Colonels only touchdown of the second half to cut the Lumberjack lead to 28-16 after a failed attempt on the two point conversion.

Michael Williams finished the night completing 11 of 15 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Michael David was the top receiver for the Lumberjacks with four catches for 60 yards and the two scores.

Tony Tompkins caught the third Williams touchdown on a great play in the second quarter. Tompkins caught a swing pass near midfield and broke an arm tackle, then raced down the sideline for the score to put the 'Jacks on top 14-7 with 2:02 left in the first half.

SFA ended the night 317 yards of total offense while Nicholls State was held to 273 yards in the game. The nation's leading rushing offense was held to 251 yards on the ground, 82 yards below its per game average.

The Lumberjacks close the regular season next Saturday in a 3:00 p.m. match-up with Northwestern State, in Natchitoches, La. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Net.
