NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack defense held Northwestern State to 100 yards of total offense as SFA posted a 33-0 victory over the Demons Saturday evening at Turpin Stadium. It is the 'Jacks' first shutout over Northwestern State since 1963. SFA finished the game with 16 tackles for losses, including eight sacks for 55 yards in losses.

"Our defense is good," said head coach J.C. Harper. "I challenged them during the off week that we wanted to be at 40 sacks for the year, and that was going to take roughly six sacks per game. They accomplished that last week, and had a tremendous effort today. You can't ask for more than that."

The Lumberjacks were unable to score on their opening possession after starting the drive with a 31-yard completion to Kris Lott from Brady Attaway, but freshman Jordan Wiggs was unable to connect on a 36-yard field goal attempt.

After a scoreless first quarter that saw both teams combine for 78 yards of total offense, SFA cracked the scoreboard first when Attaway found junior Cordell Roberson wide open down the far sideline for a 42-yard scoring strike. It turned out to be the only points of the opening half.

Following the touchdown, both defenses took back control of the contest. With less than two minutes remaining in the half Weekendfer Saurit forced Demon quarterback Brad Henderson to fumble the ball on the Northwestern 46-yard line. SFA took the following possession and moved the ball down to the Demons' 35, but on fourth down, Northwestern State dropped Attaway for a huge loss ending the half.

The Lumberjacks held their hosts to 51 yards of total offense in the opening 30 minutes, including a negative yard rushing. The 'Jacks also recorded six sacks for 44 yards in losses in the opening half, including three by Willie Jefferson.

The Lumberjacks cracked the scoreboard early in the second quarter when freshman Gus Johnson carried the ball in from two yards out 2:36 into the third. The score was setup by a 39-yard run from Fred Ford. SFA tacked on its third touchdown just under six minutes later. The Demons never mounted a serious threat in the fourth quarter.

The Lumberjacks finished the game with 437 yards of total offense, including 156 yards on the ground. The Demons were held to negative six yards rushing. Senior Devin Ducote and juniors Ryan Epperson and Jordan Aubrey led the team with seven tackles. Ducote and Willie Jefferson each had four sacks.

The Lumberjacks wrap up the 2011 season with a 6-5 overall record (.545), and a 5-2 mark in conference play. SFA closes the season with a five-game win streak to finish third overall in the conference standings.
