Nelson, Fincher Receive Academic All-SLC Recognition
Jan. 9, 2012
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Seniors Jacob Fincher and Drew Nelson have been named 2011 Academic All-Southland Conference announced league officials Monday afternoon. Fincher was a standout on the Lumberjacks' defensive line, while Nelson has been one of the league's top punters over the course of the past four seasons.
A 2011 semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy, and a two-time FCS ADA Academic All-Star, Nelson has been one of the school's most consistent punters throughout his career. Nelson averaged nearly 42 yards per punt during his four seasons in Nacogdoches, and was a two-time second-team All-SLC selection.
Fincher battled through injuries and worked his way back into the starting lineup during the 2011 campaign. A key factor in helping the Lumberjacks lead the nation in sacks and tackles for losses this past season, Fincher ended the year with three sacks and six stops behind the line of scrimmage. A leader on the Lumberjack defense, Fincher finished his career with 28 total tackles, including 18 solo stops, 12 tackles for losses, including 7.5 sacks and four recovered fumbles.
Student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, be a starter or significant reserve and have played in at least 50 percent of the team's games. The academic all-conference teams are voted on by the sports information directors, coaches and academic coordinators at each institution.
