Senior cornerback Ben Wells has been named to the AstroTurf NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, formerly the Texas vs. the Nation game, announced Bowl officials Thursday evening. The game will be played Saturday, Jan. 21, in Carson, Calif., at the Home Depot Center.
A two-year letterwinner, Wells transferred from Texas prior to the 2010 season and immediately won a starting job at corner. Wells started 21 games during his time at SFA helping guide the 'Jacks to the 2010 Southland Conference title, and a top-10 national ranking. A two-time honorable mention All-SLC selection, Wells didn't put up the numbers of other players in the league due to the fact that teams refused to throw in his direction.
Wells closed out his career with 35 total tackles, including 24 solo stops. His brightest moment may have come in his hometown when picked off a first-half pass against Lamar and returned 40 yards for a touchdown. The victory was one of five straight for the Lumberjacks to close out the 2011 season.
Wells is just one in a long line of SFA players invited to play in the all-star game. Former Lumberjack All-American, and 2009 NFL Draft choice Dominique Edison, and two-time All-American Tim Knicky each played in the game.
