NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack head football coach Robert McFarland announced today the names of 17 student-athletes who have signed letters of intent to play football and continue their education at the university next fall. Included among the group are ten offensive players, six defensive players and a kicking specialist.

"I'm extremely excited about what this coaching staff has been able to accomplish in a relatively short period of time in putting this class together, " said McFarland. "With a great deal of cooperation from Texas high school football coaches and SFA alums in the coaching ranks, we hit the ground running and worked hard for about a month in identifying the student-athletes we wanted, then went out and signed them. We have been able to address some needs and also sign quality student-athletes on the field and in the classroom. This group of young men will represent the SFA community in a very positive manner," said McFarland

On the defensive side of the ball, SFA signed three defensive backs, two defensive linemen and one linebacker. Included among the defensive backs is a state champion from Gilmer and a versatile player with great speed from Friendswood and one of the top defensive players in the state of Louisiana.

SFA also picked up a transfer from Tulane along the defensive front in the form of 6-4, 290-pound Ryan Johnson from Dallas Carter. Johnson will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Lumberjacks after playing in 2004 with the Green Wave. Karl Glimp, a 6-5, 255-pound defensive lineman from Hutto was a highly sought after recruit who was a standout on both sides of the ball for the Hippos.

Offensively, the `Jacks added three running backs, two receivers, four offensive linemen and a quarterback. Roy Gardner, a standout receiver from Lufkin will join the Lumberjack program in 2005 after helping the Panthers to a state semi-final appearance in 2004. Aaron Rhea, a 6-1, 200-pound Klein Forest product was tabbed as one of the top-100 receivers in the nation by one recruiting service and will join Gardner in the class of 2005.

SFA also addressed the need for a kicker by signing Michael Perren from Texas City. Perren is listed as a kicking specialist and can handle both kicking and punting chores, but is expected to focus on kicking at SFA. He holds the Texas City High School record with a 53-yard field goal and was listed as the 21st ranked kicker in the country by Rivals.com.

Five of the 17 high school recruits are from the immediate east Texas area, including Gardner from Lufkin, Terrance Lovely and Derrick McKenzie from Gilmer, Damieon Harper from Henderson and Damian Perkins from Hallsville.
