NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team wrapped up its last full week of spring practice Friday night with a 90-play scrimmage at Homer Bryce Stadium. Big plays on both sides of the ball were the story of the night.

"Overall, I was pleased with the scrimmage. There were a number of plays made on both sides of the ball. I wasn't particularly pleased with the three interceptions, but I thought that overall, everyone played a little better tonight than we did last week," said Mike Santiago.

Offensively, the `Jacks were able to move the ball at times against what has been a stingy SFA defense so far this spring. The Lumberjack ground game scored four rushing touchdowns, piling up 173 yards in 49 attempts. Senior running back Taylor Bunch had 10 carries for 56 yards, including two 8-yard touchdown runs. Freshman tailback Thomas Williams also had nine carries for 43 yards on the night.

Baytown sophomore Gary Allen also scored for the offense from three yards out. Allen totaled 26 yards on 12 carries.

SFA quarterbacks combined to complete 18 of 37 passes for 363 yards and one touchdown. Senior Wes Pate was six for 13 on the evening for 117 yards, including a 37-yard completion to Lawrence Hamilton.

Matt Williford, playing with both the number one and number two offensive unit, was six of 11 for 167 yards and one touchdown. Williford connected with Tyler Lee junior Anthony Dingle for a 55-yard touchdown catch and run midway through the scrimmage.

Freshman Michael Williams also connected on six of 13 attempts for 125 yards. All three quarterbacks were victimized for one interceptions each. Dingle finished the night with two catches for 88 yards and one touchdown.

While the defensive unit held tough in the first scrimmage, the offensive unit showed signs Friday night of putting things together and finding the pieces they will need heading into next fall. Marshall sophomore Paul Todd had an impressive catch over the middle and was dazzling on an end around late in the scrimmage. The trio of Allen, Bunch and Thomas Williams also showed signs of what could be a triple threat at tailback next fall for the `Jacks.

Approximately 150 high school and college football officials were in attendance at Friday's scrimmage, taking part in the annual officials clinic held in conjunction with spring practice each year at SFA. The officials will conclude their two day seminar Saturday reviewing and critiquing their work from Friday night's scrimmage.

The `Jacks will wrap up spring practice Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in Homer Bryce Stadium with the Spring Game.
