Coach Conque and his staff have completed the 'Jacks' spring practice schedule
April 11, 2014
The Clint Conque era at Stephen F. Austin has officially begun as the Lumberjacks have nearly wrapped up their 15-practice spring schedule. In the final installment of our SFA Spring Football Practice Report, we will preview Saturday's Spring Game, as well as get coach Conque's thoughts on the conclusion of the spring workouts.
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin will put the cap on its 2014 spring football season when the Lumberjacks host its annual Spring Game Saturday at Homer Bryce Stadium. The game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free as it marks the final chance for Lumberjack fans to see their team in action before the 2014 season.
With head coach Clint Conque running the helm, the format of the SFA Spring Game will be slightly different than in years past. The game will feature four quarters with a running 12 minute clock that will stop only after a scoring play, as well as regular game protocol during the final two minutes of each half.
The scoring for the game is modified as well, giving the traditional six points for a touchdown, three points for a field goal and one point for a PAT. However there will be additional points available to the offense and a handful of opportunities for the SFA defensive units to tally points as well.

The SFA marketing department will also be hosting a “Select-A-Seat” promotion, showing fans some of the best seats available for the upcoming 2014 football season. Fans that either purchase or renew their season tickets will be entered into a drawing to win a replica SFA football helmet autographed by coach Conque.
Season tickets for the 2014 football season begin at $77 and $38.50 for SFA faculty and staff as the ‘Jacks have seven home games, including tilts against Central Arkansas, Southeastern Louisiana and Northwestern State.
With the 2014 spring schedule all but in the books, SFAJacks.com caught up with coach Conque to hear his assessment on what was accomplished over the last three weeks:
On his assessment of the spring practices:
“It was great to finally be able to get out here and these young men have done everything we’ve asked them to do. There has been a significant amount of growth from that first practice until today, and hopefully tomorrow we can display some of that growth. It’s been a physical spring, and our numbers have been thin but they’ve been pretty resilient. I’m proud of them, and they know they’ve still got a long way to go. Our goal for tomorrow is to stay healthy and flash some of that talent we have.”
On the goals that were achieved during spring practices:
“Some are tangible and some aren’t. First and foremost we wanted to teach them how we wanted them to practice – the speed and tempo of practice. We set a pretty high bar there and I thought our coaches did a great job of demanding that we run and move our feet for two hours a day. The second thing is we wanted a physical mentality and we thumped it up pretty good during the course of the spring. The third goal was a cultural thing, changing how they act both on the field and off the field – working on their social behavior and how they address the classroom. We’ve seen a lot of growth, but overall by and large they’ve done a great job of doing what we’ve required of them.”
On what will be critical for SFA heading into the summer months:
“First thing is how we finish in school. We’ve reached crunch time in the semester and we’ve been emphasizing the need to finish strong in the classroom so they can come back on this field in the summer. Secondly we are going to take full advantage of the weight room between now and the end of school, and then they’ll have a few weeks off on their own. I anticipate having pretty much the entire team back for both summer semesters and that will be a very critical time for this football team. We’ll get the newcomers here in the second semester so we’re already focused on hitting the ground running this summer.”
