'Jacks Hold Final Workout Before Scrimmage
April 19, 2013
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team was on the practice field for a rare Friday afternoon workout due to inclement weather Thursday afternoon. The practice was the team's final tune up before stepping on the field Saturday for the second practice of spring camp.
The Lumberjack defense will look to slow down a very strong running attack which flipped the momentum in the first scrimmage. After locking up the 'Jacks passing attack - one that led the nation in passing offense in 2012 - the defense did a solid job of holding junior Gus Johnson in check (13 carries for 20 yards), but all that changed when redshirt sophomore Fred Ford exploded for a 40-yard touchdown run. Following the run, the offense began to take control of the scrimmage.
Quarterbacks Brady Attaway and Joe Minden each threw a touchdown pass, while receiver D.J. Ward threw a TD pass, caught a pass for a score, and carried the ball for two more scores. The Lumberjack backfield closed out the scrimmage with 23 carries for 161 yards and two scores.
The battle for starting spots on the defensive side has been intense as the 'Jacks look to replace several standouts from last season including All-America selections Josh Aubrey and Willie Jefferson, along with All-Southland linebacker Ryan Epperson.
Junior Collin Garrett has picked up during the spring where he left off last season. The Beaumont, Texas native led the Lumberjacks with 10 tackles in the first scrimmage, while Lamarcus Brown added eight.
The scrimmage is slated to begin at 9 a.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
