NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team held its second scrimmage of the spring Saturday on the practice fields at Homer Bryce Stadium. The coaching staff decided to hold out several of its key-returning players to get a better look at the reserves in game-type situations.

"We held out several players by design," said SFA head coach J.C. Harper. "We already know what the Brady Attaway's, Malcolm Mattox's and Caleb Nelson's can do on the field, so we used this opportunity to take a closer look at other players."

"Being this late into spring practice becomes a grind, but I was real happy with the enthusiasm of how they got after it today. I thought everyone gave tremendous effort. Our goal is to come out everyday and get better and I felt like we did that today," added Harper.

Sophomore quarterback Joe Minden took the snaps with the first team and completed six of his first eight attempts on the day. He finished the scrimmage 14-of-21 (.667) for 71 yards. Redshirt freshman Hunter Taylor also look impressive at times completing 10-of-22 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown. His lone TD strike was a 22-yard pass to junior Marquis Mosley in the back corner of the end zone.

Taylor was picked off once by sophomore Lamarcus Brown, who moved over to the defensive side of the ball during the offseason. Brown finished the scrimmage with three tackles, including two solo stops, and the interception.

The biggest highlight of the scrimmage came on the very first drive when Lufkin's Jamarcus Walker carried the ball right up the middle for a 51-yard touchdown run. It was his first carry of the day, and he would finished 10 carries for 81 yards.

"Walker can make plays at any time," said Harper. "If you give him a seam he will break it, and no one is going to catch him when he is out in the open."

Junior receiver Steven Cunigan led the Lumberjack receivers with four catches for 47 yards, and every one of his receptions came in traffic. Junior Rodney Young led the Lumberjacks with five tackles, including three solo stops, and one tackle for a loss.

The Lumberjacks will be back on the practice field Tuesday to open the final week of spring camp. SFA will close out the spring with the annual spring game Saturday, April 27, at 2 p.m.
