NACOGDOCHES, Texas -
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team will step onto the field at Homer Bryce Stadium for the final day of spring practice Saturday for the annual Purple and White Scrimmage. Saturday's scrimmage is slated for a 2 p.m. start, and will be the team's final workout until they report back for preseason camp in August.
The scrimmage will pit the SFA first-team offense against the first-team defense. It is the third scrimmage of the spring for the Lumberjacks. The first two scrimmages have been marked my big plays in all facets of the game. The Lumberjack running backs have recorded three running plays of 40 yards or more, including two 50-yard runs, receivers Marquis Mosley and D.J. Ward have put up some impressive numbers and Collin Garrett and Lamarcus Brown have looked impressive on defense. The Lumberjack defense has also come up four interceptions in the two previous scrimmages, and the Lumberjack special teams blocked a kick that was returned for a touchdown in the second scrimmage.
In the two previous scrimmages SFA quarterbacks have combined to complete 44-of-87 (.505) passes for 405 yards and three touchdowns, while the running backs have combined to tally 242 yards on 33 carries (7.3 ypc) and three touchdowns.
One of the most impressive stats on the Lumberjack defense is how they have handled the Lumberjack ground game. Junior running back Gus Johnson has made a name for himself over the past two seasons for running over would-be tacklers, but the SFA defense has done a great job of wrapping up and preventing Johnson from breaking the long runs, even dropping Johnson for a loss three times during the opening scrimmage. Johnson was able to exact a small bit of revenge on the defense at the end of the first scrimmage with a 50-yard scamper for a score.
