NACOGDOCHES, Texas -
All-Southland Conference linebacker Derrick Choice has signed a free agent contract with the St. Louis Rams. Just a year after former Stephen F. Austin All-American linebacker Jabara Williams was drafted by the St. Louis franchise, the Rams add another Lumberjack to their ranks.
"Playing professional football is every kid's dream, especially for those that are fortunate enough to go on and play at the collegiate level." said Choice. "Not everyone gets this opportunity. It is a privilege and a dream come true and I plan on making the best of it."
One of the Southland Conference's top linebackers all four seasons, Choice ended his career with 367 total tackles, including 33 for losses and 5.5 sacks. Choice closed out his career by earning honorable mention All-Southland Conference honors in each of his final three seasons.
Choice was a key part of SFA's run to consecutive SLC titles, the only team in program history to reach that milestone. SFA also recorded two top-10 finishes during his career. As a senior, he helped SFA lead the nation in sacks and tackles for losses.
"It was exciting moment to receive the call from the Rams," said Choice. "I've been receiving calls from them letting me know that they like my film, and were interested in me. I had an idea they might give me a chance."
Despite the numbers he put up during his career, the thing that might be remembered most about Choice was his durability. During his four-year career, he never missed a start - a span that covered 48-straight games.
