May 13, 2013
Junior running back Gus Johnson has been named to the 2013 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Watch List announced CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith late Sunday evening. Johnson is one of only 33 running backs named to the preseason list.
Johnson proved himself as one of the nation's top running backs during the 2012 season. A first-team All-Southland Conference selection, Johnson finished second in the league averaging nearly 100 yards per game. Johnson carried the ball 154 times for 954 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season.
"Gus is a complete running back," said head coach J. C. Harper. "He can run the ball inside, he can catch the ball out of the backfield and he can pass block because he is so strong. His strength also allows him to pick up positive yards after the catch."
Johnson had a breakout game in the rain soaked contest against Central Arkansas. He finished the contest pounding out 215 yards and four touchdowns against nationally ranked Central Arkansas. He earned Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts. It was one of five 100-yard rushing games on the season, and one of two 200-yard games. Johnson finished the season tied for 12th in the nation with 14 rushing touchdowns.
Johnson was the nation's sixth-leading rusher, in terms of sophomore running backs, during the 2012 season. He is among the nation's top 20 returning backs enter 2013.
