NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football schedule for next season has been released and features five home games for the defending Southland Football League Champions.

The Lumberjacks open the 2000 football season with an August 31 home game with Central Oklahoma, a Lone Star Conference member that has qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs each of the last two seasons. The Broncos have posted seasons of 12-1 and 8-3 in the last two years. The Thursday night opener will allow students and fans to catch the action of the season opener without missing out on Labor Day weekend activities.

SFA returns to Homer Bryce Stadium again the following weekend as Texas A&M-Commerce pays a visit with former SFA assistant Eddie Brister at the helm. Brister served as the offensive coordinator for the Lumberjacks from 1992-1998.

The Lumberjacks hit the road for the first time in the 2000 season on September 16 as they travel to Ruston, Louisiana to take on Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs, a Division I school, will move to the WAC starting with the fall of 2001. Last season, Tech featured one of the country's best college quarterbacks in Tim Ratay.

SFA closes out the non-conference portion of their schedule with another road game with the University of Northern Iowa, a perennial top-25 power from the Gateway Conference. The September 23 match-up with the Panthers will take place at 4:05 in the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The game marks the second trip in five years to Cedar Falls by the Lumberjacks. SFA is 1-2 against the Panthers in the three game series.

The Lumberjacks take a week off before seven straight weeks of Southland Football League action. The team opens defense of their Southland Football League title with a road match-up with McNeese State, in Lake Charles on October 7. SFA then returns home for Homecoming 2000 and a date with arch rival Sam Houston State on October 14. The Homecoming game will once again kick-off at 2:00 p.m.

The `Jacks then take to the road for two straight league games at Nicholls State and Jacksonville State before returning to Homer Bryce Stadium the first week of November for a big showdown with Troy State. The Trojans and Lumberjacks shared the `99 SFL title last season.

SFA closes out the season with a road trip to San Marcos for a November 11 game with Southwest Texas, and returns home for a renewal of the Battle for Chief Caddo with Northwestern State on November 18.
