Johnson Named to 2014 CFPA Watch List

Senior Gus Johnson is one of four SLC players named to the 2014 CFPA Running Back Watch List

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin senior running back Gus Johnson has been named to the 2014 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Running Back Watch List, announced today by the organization.

“Congratulations to Gus Johnson on earning a spot on this year’s Watch List,” said CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith. “Under head coach Clint Conque, Johnson will be one of the top Southland Conference players to watch in 2014.”

Johnson enters his senior season having already etched his name among the Lumberjack greats. The Gilmer native has rushed for 2,224 career yards, sitting sixth all-time in program history, while posting 28 career touchdowns, which is third all-time and enters the 2014 campaign just five shy of become the ‘Jacks all-time leader.

A two-time All-Southland Conference selection, Johnson had his best season in an SFA uniform last year, rushing for a career-best 1,061 yards, which was the fifth-best single-season performance in Lumberjack history. Johnson tallied seven 100-yard performance games in 2013 with 11 touchdowns while also catching 21 passes for 108 yards.

The initial Watch List includes 38 returning performers vying for the top running back award in the Football Championship Subdivision. Johnson is one of four Southland Conference players named to the list, joined by Houston Baptist’s B.J. Kelly, Incarnate Word’s Broderick Reeves and Lamar’s Kade Harrington.

The goal of College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. Twenty-eight CFPA winners have been first-round NFL Draft selections.

Johnson and the rest of the Lumberjacks open up the 2014 campaign on Saturday, August 30th, when SFA travels to Manhattan, Kan., to battle Big 12 foe Kansas State. The ‘Jacks open up the 2014 home schedule the following Saturday, hosting SLC newcomer Incarnate Word at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.
