NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin senior wide receivers Tyler Boyd and DJ Ward have been named to the 2014 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Wide Receiver Watch List, announced today by the organization. The duo joins Gus Johnson, who was named to the Running Back Watch List last week.
“Congratulations to both Tyler Boyd and DJ Ward on earning spots on this year’s Watch List,” said CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith. “Boyd and Ward were highly productive receivers in 2013."
Boyd was an honorable mention All-Southland Conference selection in 2013 after hauling in 79 passes for 1,183 yards – both of which rank second all-time in program history for single-season performances. Boyd had a pair of 200-yard receiving games, including 229 yards at Lamar in the second-highest single game performance in school history.
Ward was also an honorable mention All-Southland Conference selection last season, ranking third on the team with 61 catches for 809 yards and seven touchdowns. He notched three 100-yard receiving games, highlighted by his 170-yard performance against Prairie View A&M, while also serving as a dual threat, returning 11 kicks for 196yards for the Lumberjacks.
The initial Watch List includes 38 returning performers vying for the top wide receiver award in the Football Championship Subdivision. Boyd and Ward are two of the five Southland Conference players named to the list, joining Central Arkansas’ Dezmin Lewis and Lamar’s Reggie Belton and Mark Roberts.
The goal of College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. Twenty-eight CFPA winners have been first-round NFL Draft selections.
Boyd, Ward and the rest of the Lumberjacks open up the 2014 campaign on Saturday, August 30th, when SFA travels to Manhattan, Kan., to battle Big 12 foe Kansas State. The ‘Jacks open up the 2014 home schedule the following Saturday, hosting SLC newcomer Incarnate Word at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.
