Moment #13: SFA Stuns Second-Ranked Bobcats

It was another successful athletic season for Stephen F. Austin in 2013-14, capped by memorable games, incredible performances, championship efforts and moments that will be remembered for years to come. To close out the 2013-14 season, SFAJacks.com will count down the top 15 moments of the past year as voted on by the SFA administrative staff and media representatives. NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin notched a victory for the ages at Homer Bryce Stadium in 2013, rallying in the fourth quarter to knock off second-ranked Montana State 52-38 on September 21st.
Trailing 38-31 with 11:34 remaining, the Lumberjacks mounted a 21-point fourth quarter rally as Joshawa West tied the game with a 13 yard rush with 8:45 remaining, followed by Gus Johnson's third touchdown of the game with 5:01 to go put the `Jacks on top 45-38. With the Bobcats driving late in the game, Ortavious Hypolite intercepted a MSU pass and returned it 25 yards for the score with 26 seconds remaining, sealing the victory for SFA.
The `Jacks had the early momentum against their northern visitors, racing out to a 17-3 first quarter lead behind touchdowns from Mike Brooks and Johnson. SFA would push that lead to 31-17 in the second quarter before a late Bobcat touchdown cut the halftime lead to seven at 31-24.
MSU would notch the only score of the third quarter, but would fail on the two-point conversion as SFA held a slim 31-30 lead heading into the fourth. The Bobcats notched a touchdown with 11:34 to to, giving MSU its first lead of the game and capping a 21-0 run before the `Jacks staged the comeback.
SFA finished with 567 total yards on the night, led by 392 passing yards from Brady Attaway who completed 34 of his 56 passes with a pair of touchdowns. Brooks hauled in a team-high nine passes for 89 yards and a score while Aaron Thomas (79 yds.) and Ward (78 yds, 1 TD) each had sic receptions. Johnson once again led the SFA rushing attack with 157 yards on 26 carries and three touchdowns in the victory.
Collin Garrett led the `Jacks with 12 tackles while Hypolite added 11 stops to go along with his game-winning interception return. In all, SFA intercepted four Bobcat passes, including a 57-yarder from Trey Vallier to set up a `Jack score. Jordan Burton also posted 11 stops for SFA.
The victory over the Bobcats was the first victory for SFA over a ranked opponent since the `Jacks knocked off 12th-ranked Central Arkansas 42-37 in 2012. The win over Montana State also signified SFA's highest-ranked victory since a 27-17 win at second-ranked Appalachian State in the 1995 NCAA Division I -AA quarterfinal.
