July 9, 2014
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin head football coach Clint Conque today announced the addition of Tom Howe to the Lumberjack coaching staff. Howe began his new position on July 6th, overseeing the SFA defensive ends.
"Tom is a high energy coach with a great pedigree behind him," said Conque. "He has experience across all levels, having won a national championship at the Division II level as well as working at the FBS level under former SFA head coach Robert McFarland at Iowa State. Plus he played at the FCS level and had a solid career at Drake. He is a players' coach and will bring some stability to the defensive end position."
Howe comes to Nacogdoches having spent the last two seasons on the staff at Central Oklahoma. While in Edmond, Howe oversaw as the Bronchos linebackers coach while also serving as UCO's special teams coordinator.
Prior to his time at Central Oklahoma, Howe spent one season at MIAA rival Missouri Southern, working with the Lions' defensive line. During his time in Joplin, MSSU's defensive unit broke the program's single-season sack record with 33, including setting a new single-game mark with nine against Southwest Baptist.
In 2010, Howe served as the outside linebackers and defensive line coach at Minnesota-Duluth, helping guide the Bulldogs to a 15-0 record and the NCAA Division II national title. UMD led the nation in fewest points allowed while ranking among the national leaders in three other defensive categories.
Howe spent three seasons at Iowa State (2007-09), assisting with the Cyclones' offensive line under former SFA head coach Robert McFarland. He began his coaching career at 2004 as an assistant coach at Clinton (Iowa) High School, his alma mater, before serving as a graduate assistant at Minot State (2005) and Drake (2006), his collegiate alma mater.
Howe was a three-year letterwinner at Drake on the defensive line, earning second team All-Pioneer Conference honors in 2002. He earned his bachelor's degree in secondary education in 2004 before attaining his master's degree from Iowa State. He is married to the former Kara DeShaw.
