Senior Gus Johnson is a two-time All-SLC selection heading into 2014

FRISCO, Texas – The Southland Conference has announced its 2014 Preseason All-Conference Football teams with four Stephen F. Austin players earning a nod. Senior running back Gus Johnson and senior wide receiver Tyler Boyd were named first team selections while junior offensive lineman Byron Williams and junior punter Nick Bruno earned second team honors.

Johnson, a two-time All-SLC selection, enters his final season having already etched his name among the Lumberjack greats. The Gilmer native has rushed for 2,224 career yards, sitting sixth all-time in program history, while posting 28 career touchdowns, which is third all-time. Johnson had his best season in an SFA uniform last year, rushing for a career-best 1,061 yards, which was the fifth-best single-season performance in Lumberjack history.
Boyd was an honorable mention All-Southland Conference selection in 2013 after hauling in 79 passes for 1,183 yards – both of which rank second all-time in program history for single-season performances. Boyd had a pair of 200-yard receiving games, including 229 yards at Lamar in the second-highest single game performance in school history.
Williams has been a consistent up front for SFA for the past two seasons, appearing in all 23 games with 20 starts. He provide blocking for quarterback Brady Attaway, who finished second all-time in both SFA and SLC history in passing yards, and Johnson as the ‘Jacks ranked among the national leaders in a number of offensive categories.
Bruno was also an honorable mention All-Southland Conference selection in 2013 after averaging 40.4 yards per punt, notching 12 punts of 50-yards or more on the season. He enters the 2014 season with a career punting average of 39.27 yards per punt, which currently ranks sixth all-time in program history, and has two of the top-10 longest punts in the Lumberjack record book.
Returning student-athletes who earned all-conference honors at the conclusion of the 2013 season were automatically named to the preseason teams. Head coaches from the 11 schools that play football in the Southland Conference voted for the remaining 38 positions, which included five on the first-team offense, four on the first-team defense, 14 positions on the second-team offense and 15 on the second-team defense. Coaches could not vote for their own players.
The conference’s two preseason polls – coaches and sports information directors – will be announced July 23 at media day.
The Lumberjacks open up the 2014 campaign on Saturday, August 30th, when SFA travels to Manhattan, Kan., to battle Big 12 foe Kansas State. The `Jacks open up the 2014 home schedule the following Saturday, hosting SLC newcomer Incarnate Word at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.
