Lumberjacks Picked Second in Poll of SFL Coaches and SIDs

    July 28, 2000

In spite of losing 11 first and second team All-Southland Football League players off last year's co-championship team, the Troy State Trojans have been picked as the team to beat in the SFL this season.

The Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin, who also shared last year's title, were picked a close second in a poll of the league's head coaches and sports information directors. The Lumberjacks return the league's preseason All-SFL quarterback in junior Wes Pate, as well as two preseason All-SFL offensive linemen in Shannon Yates and Josh Arceneaux.

Derrick Blaylock also takes over at tailback after sharing time the past two seasons. He also is a second team All-SFL preseason pick.

McNeese State has been picked third in the poll, in spite of off season changes in their coaching staff.

Rounding out the poll of league head coaches and SIDs, Northwestern State has been picked fourth, followed by Southwest Texas, Sam Houston, Jacksonville State and Nicholls State rounding out the eight team league.
