Aug. 5, 2013
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team enters the 2013 season ranked 27th according to collegesportsmadness.com. In addition to their national rank, the web site also has SFA ranked third in the Southland Conference. The 'Jacks enter camp returning 16 starters from last year's squad, including six preseason All-Southland Conference selections.
The Lumberjacks averaged more than 34 points per game last season. The offense returns several key players from the high-octane offense, including quarterback Brady Attaway, running Gus Johnson and receiver D.J. Ward. In addition to those three SFA also returns several starters, including seniors Andrew Ratliff and Ryne Chambers, on an offensive line that was ranked among the nation's elite.
The Lumberjack defense returns arguably the best defensive end duo in the nation between Malcolm Mattox and Darren Robinson. Robinson was a first-team all-conference pick last season, while Mattox returns to his natural position after spending the 2012 season at tackle. During his sophomore season, Mattox garnered all-conference honors.
