Although the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team is entering day three of preseason camp, excitement is building toward the annual Battle of the Piney Woods. Houston Texans' President Jamey Rootes was in town Wednesday promoting the annual rivalry game to Lumberjack fans.
The 2013 version of the Battle of the Piney Woods will take place Saturday, Nov. 2. It is moving into its fourth season at Reliant Stadium, and the contract to keep the game in Houston has been extended through the 2017 season.
The Lumberjacks won the first battle in Houston, behind the leadership of Walter Payton Award winner Jeremy Moses. The annual rivalry game winner has gone on to produce the Southland Conference Champion each of the past three seasons.
In addition to speaking about the upcoming game against Sam Houston State, Rootes also spoke about the two-time defending AFC South Champion Texans. Rootes added an SFA flavor to the Texans highlights letting the packed room know about the success of former Lumberjack All-American Willie Jefferson. A free agent signee with the Texans, Jefferson continues to work his way up the depth chart at linebacker.
