Aug. 8, 2012
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team received some preseason accolades from Phil Steele's Football Magazine Wednesday afternoon. The Lumberjacks have been ranked 13th according to the Phil Steele Preseason Top 25 poll. In addition to that three Lumberjacks were named to the preseason All-America squad, while 11 players garnered preseason all-conference recognition.
Wednesday's poll is the second preseason top-25 poll SFA has landed in prior to the start of the 2012 campaign. SFA is one of only two Southland schools in the publication's top 25.
In addition to the preseason ranking defensive end Willie Jefferson, return specialist Gralyn Crawford and receiver Cordell Roberson garnered All-America attention. Jefferson received first-team honors, along with Crawford who was listed as the nation's top punt returner. Roberson is a third-team pick at receiver.
Along with the three All-America selections, SFA had other players named to the preseason all-conference teams. Quarterback Brady Attaway, center John Steel, defensive lineman Malcolm Mattox and linebacker Ryan Epperson joined the three All-Americans on the first team, while running back Jeremy Barnes, offensive lineman Austin Wright and corner back Josh Aubrey landed second-team recognition. Crawford also received second-team honors as an all-purpose player.
The Lumberjacks open the 2012 season Thursday, Aug. 30th, against Southwestern Oklahoma. The game is slated to kick off at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
