The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team wrapped up the first week of fall camp with a morning workout at Homer Bryce Stadium. It marked the team's first practice on the stadium's artificial surface.
Junior quarterback Danny Southall re-emphasized his veteran status at quarterback by putting up some big numbers during the workout. Southall finished the practice completing all seven of his pass attempts for 87 yards. On the day, the 6-3 Hitchcock, Texas native connected with six different targets. Southall also recorded a 12-yard scamper that would prove to be the offense's longest rush of the day.
"I've been very pleased with the retention of our first two units," said SFA head coach Robert McFarland on the first full week of fall camp. "We are focusing right now on developing our depth at every position."
Although Southall had a good day in the pocket, the SFA defense was tough against the Lumberjacks' ground game. For the third consecutive day the defense neutralized the speed of the 'Jacks' backfield. Speedsters Vincent Pervis and Lester Simmons were held in check, unable to break away from the defensive pursuit. Even junior Louie Runnels, who has been breaking tackle after tackle to put up some impressive numbers, was unable to get away from the guys in the purple jerseys Friday. Runnels did record a seven-yard run, the longest run of the day from SFA's stable of running backs.
"I'm really impressed with our defensive line. Those guys are still really young, but they are doing a great job," said McFarland. "Our defensive front has done a really good job of tying up blockers and allowing our skill guys to make play after play."
The 'Jacks will spend the rest of the day in position meetings, before taking the field Saturday for their first two-a-day practice. SFA will hit the field at 8:15 a.m. for a two-hour workout. The Lumberjacks will return to the field Saturday evening for a 7:30 practice. Practices are free and open to the public.
The annual `Meet the 'Jacks' is slated for Tuesday Aug. 22 at 6:30 p.m. The start time for the event has been changed from its original start time to 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from any Fredonia Rotary Club member and participating local banks.
The Lumberjacks will hold their lone scrimmage of fall camp Saturday Aug. 19 at Homer Bryce Stadium. The scrimmage is free to the public and will begin at 8:20 a.m.
