NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team readied themselves for Saturday night's scrimmage with an impressive day of work Friday. The morning practice was highlighted by the impressive play of quarterback Wes Pate offensively, and linebacker Aubrey Brisendine on the defensive side of the ball.
"I really saw good things on both sides of the ball Friday morning. I saw guys getting better all over the field, and I saw the team start to really come together," said head coach Mike Santiago. "Throughout the workout Friday morning I heard guys talking to one another, start to get excited, celebrating good plays and helping guys make corrections when they missed an assignment."
Quarterback Wes Pate was impressive in the morning workout. The First Team All-Southland Football League preseason pick from Arp, said following the workout that he si really starting to see things, and has a good grasp of the offense heading into the final week of fall camp.
"Pate had a good workout. I really think that things have come together for him as far as understanding what he needs to do on the field," said Santiago.
On the defensive side of the ball, the battle continues among a group of linebackers for starting spots. Returning starters Reggie Williams, Kyle Dews and DeKendrick Vidito and all in heated battle for the starting spots with a talented group of veterans and newcomers. Aubrey Brisendine continues to improve at linebacker after moving to the position last spring. Brisendine was impressive Friday with several good stops and was also good in pass coverage.
Joining Brisendine in pressing for playing time are newcomers Jared Williams, Jeremy Davis, Eric Robinson and Nick Trotter. Added to those newcomers is returning junior Bruce Bates, who was impressive last season on special teams and in certain situations.
The `Jacks will hold a 90-play scrimmage Saturday night in Homer Bryce Stadium, starting at 7:00 p.m.
*?QB Peyton Jones was voted Outstading Finance Student in the school of business earlier this year. The Houston senior will return this season as a back-up to Wes Pate.
* RB Taylor Bunch will see time in the backfield for the `Jacks this season, and will also serve as the back-up at kicker and punter. Bunch is a former All-Stae soccer player in Louisiana.
* WR Paul Todd will see his first action on the football field this fall for SFA after winning both the indoor and outdoor Southland Conference high jump championship as a true freshman. The Marshall, Texas product was also a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships.
