NACOGDOCHES, Texas -
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team returns to the field Saturday evening for a 7 p.m. scrimmage. It is the second scheduled scrimmage of fall camp.
The battle for the starting quarterback spot started out as a two-man race and has remained that way through preseason drills. Junior Dalton Williams completed 16-of-22 passes for 159 yards in last weeks scrimmage and also had one interception, while Attaway completed 23-of-34 for 225 yards and a couple of scores. The rest of the SFA quarterbacks were 18-of-29 for 241 yards and a touchdown.
Despite those numbers the offense had trouble scoring points late in the scrimmage. The offense could manage only three field goals and a touchdown, before transitioning into its red zone offense. One player to keep an eye on Saturday will be freshman Garrett Smith who had a strong outing in the first scrimmage and has continued to put up big plays throughout camp. Smith hauled in five passes for 74 yards and score last week.
Junior Ryan Epperson had a strong performance at linebacker in the first scrimmage. A backup to All-American Jabara Williams each of the past two seasons, Epperson was one of the defensive leaders last week recording five tackles and picking off a pass.
