NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Lightning shortened the afternoon workout of the Lumberjack football team by about 20 minutes Monday afternoon. The team will conclude fall camp with two workouts on Tuesday prior to the annual "Meet the `Jacks"? night at the Fredonia Hotel.
SFA will practice Tuesday morning in pads, with tomorrow afternoon's workout focusing on special teams. Following Tuesday's afternoon workout, the team will break fall camp with "Meet the Lumberjacks" at 6:30 p.m.
SFA head coach Mike Santiago said following Tuesday's workout that quarterback Wes Pate has had an outstanding fall camp and expects a big season from the Arp junior. "Wes has been very impressive during two-a-days. About one-third of the way through fall camp it seemed like the light went on for Wes. He really started to see the things he needs to see last week and has excelled in all phases of the game,"
Pate was voted to the second team All-Southland Football League all-conference team following the 1999 season. In `99 Pate threw for 1,840 yards with only eight interceptions. He was named first team All-SFL in a preseason poll of league head coaches.
The 6-3, 240 pound junior from Arp, also connected on 17 touchdown passes as a sophomore. The 17 touchdowns put Pate in sixth place for most touchdowns in a season by a Lumberjack quarterback, and also place him ninth on the all-time career touchdown pass list after only one season.
The Lumberjacks will follow Tuesday's workouts with a scrimmage Wednesday night in Homer Bryce Stadium starting at 7:00 p.m. The team will then begin preparations for the season opener on Thursday. SFA opens the season on August 31, with the University of Central Oklahoma at 7:00 p.m.
