Aug. 22, 2012

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks will enter the 2012 season ranked 24th according to the FCS Coaches Preseason Top 25 poll announced the Southern Conference office Wednesday afternoon. The 'Jacks head into the new season ranked in every major preseason poll.

SFA is ranked as high as 13th and as low as 25th depending on the poll. The Lumberjacks, winners of five straight to close the 2011 season, return 10 of 11 starters on offense including All-American receivers Cordell Roberson and Gralyn Crawford and quarterback Brady Attaway. The 'Jacks also return four of five starters on the offensive line, a line that led the nation in pass protection a year ago.

SFA also returns several key figures from a defense that led the nation in sacks and tackles for losses in 2011. Preseason All-American Willie Jefferson and preseason all-conference defensive lineman Malcolm Mattox headline that list. SFA also returns league-leading tackler Ryan Epperson at linebacker and three of four starters in the secondary.

The 'Jacks open the regular season Thursday, Aug. 30, against Southwestern Oklahoma. The game against the Bulldogs is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
