NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks officially closed fall camp Wednesday night with a two-hour scrimmage in Homer Bryce Stadium. While the offense prevailed in an earlier scrimmage Saturday, the defensive unit came out Wednesday night and performed well.
"I told the team that now they are through hitting each other, tomorrow we begin working on Central Oklahoma. I thought the defense came out and played well tonight. After 23 years of coaching I knew that the defense would come out tonight and excel, and sure enough they did just that. They have gotten two weeks worth of reps against our offensive units, and they had an advantage tonight," said Mike Santiago.
Five SFA quarterbacks combined for a 12 of 36 night through the air for 119 yards and no touchdowns. Wes Pate was 6 of 16 for 63 yards in the scrimmage, highlighted by a 27-yard connection with tailback Derrick Blaylock. Travis Fallon was also three of seven for 33 yards, connecting with Richard Daniels late in the scrimmage for a 29-yard completion.
Freshman Gary Allen of Baytown led the way in the Lumberjack ground game, carrying the ball nine times for 14 yards.
Ryan Rossner, a freshman kicker from Metairie, Louisiana connected for the only score of the night a 47-yard field goal on his first attempt, he later just missed from 54-yards out.
"We accomplished what we wanted to accomplish tonight. From an offensive standpoint we worked on a lot of game management situations, signalling in plays and clock control. We ran some plays in situations that we normally wouldn't do just to get them on film. We looked at a lot of players and will now be better able to evaluate the team as we enter the season," added Santiago.
The Lumberjacks begin preparation for the University of Central Oklahoma on Thursday. The teams will meet in the season opener August 31 in Homer Bryce Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
