NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team will kick off the 2005 season Thursday, Sept. 1, with a home game against Henderson State. The Lumberjacks got a preview of that day's schedule Thursday, when they participated in what first-year head coach Robert McFarland has dubbed the "'Jacks Classic."

"The 'Jacks Classic is basically putting the team through the paces of a game day," McFarland said. "We schedule everything from what time they'll eat to what time they report to the stadium, to when we go out to stretch."

The game day simulation began Thursday morning and was scheduled to culminate in a small scrimmage at Homer Bryce Stadium, starting at 7 p.m.

"It helps the kids learn our locker room routines -- pre-game, halftime and post-game," McFarland said.

McFarland said Thursday he was pleased with the progress his linebackers have made.

"The guys did a good job of learning the system," he said. "They've been one of our top groups, one of our more solid units in camp. They're young but excited."

McFarland has yet to set the depth chart at the position, but junior transfer Kenneth Boley and senior Ryan Luedecke have seen significant practice time at linebacker.
