FRISCO, Texas -
Stephen F. Austin sophomore running back Gus Johnson has been named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week announced league officials Monday morning. The honor, which is the first conference superlative of Johnson's career, comes following his performance in SFA's 42-37 upset over No. 14 Central Arkansas in a rain-soaked Homer Bryce Stadium Saturday night.
Johnson carried the ball 32 times for 215 yards and four touchdowns against the Bears, setting new career highs in all three categories. With Johnson leading the way, SFA outgained their visitors from Conway by 250 yards.
Johnson's 215-yard performance was the sixth-best single-game performance in school history, and he tied the school record for most points in a game. It was the first time a Lumberjack eclipsed the 200-yards rushing since Louie Runnels recorded 205 against Southeastern Louisiana in 2006. It was also the most rushing yards by an SFA back since KaRon Coleman rushed for 216 in 1999.
The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday in the annual Battle of the Piney Woods. The game against the Bearkats is slated to begin at 3 p.m. from Reliant Stadium, and will be televised on the Southland Network. Tickets are still available through the SFA Ticket Office at (936) 468-JACK.
