SFA Prepares for No. 9 Sam Houston State

BATTLE OF THE PINEY WOODS NEXT ON THE DOCKET: Fresh off their 42-37 upset of No. 14 Central Arkansas, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (2-3/1-0) will look to make it two in a row over nationally ranked teams as they travel to Houston take on 2011 NCAA FCS runner-up Sam Houston State. The Bearkats (2-2/0-1 SLC) ended a two-game skid last week with a 50-6 victory over Texas Southern. Saturday's game is slated to begin at 3 p.m. from Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas, and will be televised on the Southland Network. Saturday's game marks the third consecutive season the annual Battle of the Piney Woods has been played at the neutral site.
SFA vs. THE BEARKATS: Saturday's contest marks the 87th meeting between Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State in the annual Battle of the Piney Woods. The Lumberjacks trail the all-time series, 50-35-2 (.586), to their rivals, but have won two of the last three meetings. The two schools have split the two meetings in Reliant Stadium, with the Bearkats taking a 45-10 victory last season. SFA is 3-7 (.300) in the last 10 meetings against Sam Houston State.
SFA vs. RANKED TEAMS: The Lumberjacks are 20-32 (.385) against teams ranked in the NCAA Division I FCS top 25. After dropping 13 of 17 games against ranked teams, SFA has now won five of its last nine against the top 25. The 'Jacks are 1-1 (.500) against the FCS top 25 in 2012. Saturday's game against Sam Houston State will be second-straight game against a ranked opponent, and one of four games on the schedule.
SFA IN TELEVISED GAMES: SFA is 15-19 (.441) in televised games dating back to 1998. The Lumberjacks have won six of their last 10 televised games, but have split the last four, and are coming off two loss this season (at SMU and Montana State). Saturday's game is one of at least five game that will be televised in 2012.
SFA IN AFTERNOON GAMES: Saturday's contest will be one of three afternoon games this season. The Lumberjacks are 0-1 in afternoon games in 2012, but was 2-1 (.667) in 2011.
SLC RECORD BOOKS: Senior Cordell Roberson became the SFA, and Southland Conference's all-time leader in touchdown receptions at Texas State. He needs only 38 more receptions to become the conference's all-time leading receiver in that category.
THE COACHES: J.C. Harper became the 18th head coach of the SFA Lumberjack football team in December 2006. A two-time SLC Coach of the Year, Harper has guided SFA to two conference titles and NCAA playoff appearances. He is 31-33 (.484) in his sixth season as a head coach. Sam Houston State head coach Willie Fritz is 22-7 (.759) in three seasons with the Bearkats. The 2011 Southland Conference Coach of the Year has recorded a 158-59-1 (.727) throughout his career, and guided the Bearkats to the 2011 NCAA FCS Championship game.
