PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -
Stephen F. Austin senior receiver Cordell Roberson has been added to the 2012 Walter Payton Award Watch List announced Sports Network Executive Director Craig Haley Tuesday morning. Roberson is one of only 20 players nationally, and one of only three Southland Conference players on the list.
Among the 20 players currently on the watch list, only three are receivers. Roberson joins Elon's Aaron Mellette and Erik Lora of Eastern Illinois, who also was just added to the list. Roberson will be looking to follow in the footsteps former SFA quarterback Jeremy Moses who won the award following the 2010 campaign, becoming the first player in school and conference history to receive it.
A two-time first-team All-SLC selection, Roberson garnered Sports Network All-America honors in 2010 after leading the nation in touchdown receptions. Roberson is putting together a similar campaign in 2012. The Jefferson, Texas native currently leads the conference, and is among the nation's top five in receptions (9.7 pg) and receiving yards (127.3 ypg). He is also tied for fifth nationally with eight touchdown receptions.
Earlier this season Roberson became the school's all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards and owns the school and conference record in touchdown receptions (37). Only the fourth player in conference history to record 200 career receptions, Roberson is on pace to become the conference's all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards. He currently ranks among the FCS' all-time top 20 in touchdown receptions.
Roberson, and the Lumberjacks, return to action Saturday when they travel to Lake Charles, La., to face McNeese State. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. and will be televised on the Southland Network.
