HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team improved by twelve strokes, firing a 292-298-286 – 876 to take a share of third place Tuesday in the Rice Intercollegiate on the par-72 course at Westwood Golf Club.
Sophomore Blake Pugh represented SFA as the lone ‘Jack in the top 10, shooting a two-under par 70 to finish with three-day total of 215. Pugh finished in a three-way tie for seventh place.
Senior Mitchell McLeroy, back to near opening-round form, fired a one-under par 71 (69-78-71 – 218) to finish two-over for the tournament to finish in a four-way tie for 14th.
Freshman Luke Sheehan and Major Monzingo mirrored each other over the two-day, three-round tournament carding a 223 to tie for 33rd place. Sheenan repeated his second-round performance, taking a 73 (77-73-73 – 233) in the closing round, while Monzingo improved by five strokes to card a 72 (74-77-72 – 223).
Sophomore Austin DeWitt finished with a 79 (78-75-79 – 232) on the final day to round out the SFA card.
The Lumberjacks will enjoy a month off before returning to competition Friday Mar. 15, when they travel to Laredo, Texas, to compete in the Border Olympics.
