SFA Surges To Sixth-Place Finish at Rice Intercollegiate

HOUSTON - Stephen F. Austin posted the second-lowest score of Tuesday's final round, leaping three spots to finish sixth at the Rice Intercollegiate at Westwood Golf Club. The Lumberjacks fired a 3-over 291 to close out the 54-hole tournament with a 30-over 894, notching their fourth top-six finish of the season.
A pair of `Jacks recorded even-par 72s on the day, led by junior Blake Pugh who finished in sole possession of 12th-place with a 3-over 219 (75-72-72). It is the 16th top-20 finish of Pugh's career as he finished three shots better than sophomore Luke Sheehan's 6-over 222 (74-75-73). Sheehan, who nearly notched a double eagle on hole six, posted the seventh top-20 showing of his SFA career, tying for 16th overall.
Junior Austin DeWitt was the second `Jack to shoot an even-par 72 Tuesday, matching his career-best for a single round while finishing tied for 25th overall with a 9-over 225 (75-78-72). Redshirt freshman Baxter Ward carded a 12-over 228 (79-75-74), tying for 33rd overall, while junior Bradley Phelps notched a 21-over 237 (81-79-77). Freshman Cory Brown tied his personal-best round with a 2-over 74 in the final round, notching a 17-over 233 (81-78-74) competing as an individual.
Beginning Tuesday's final round in ninth place, SFA made a run at the teams ahead of it, leapfrogging a handful of teams, including a pair of Southland Conference foes, to finish just out of the top-five. The Lumberjacks finished six shots better than Houston Baptist (36-over 900), seven shots ahead of eighth-place McNeese State (37-over 901) and 11 shots ahead of ninth-place Gonzaga (41-over 905).
UT-San Antonio repeated as Rice Intercollegiate champions, shooting an 11-over 875 to defeat second-place Sam Houston State (14-over 878) by three shots. Cincinnati (15-over 879) placed third with Old Dominion (16-over 880) and the host Owls (23-over 887) rounding out the top-five.
SFA will be back in action next week as the `Jacks head to Lake Charles, La., competing in the Moe O'Brien Intercollegiate. Hosted by McNeese State, the 54-hole tournament gets underway with the first two rounds on Monday, Feb. 24, before wrapping up with the final round on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
