SFA Finishes Tied for 12th at Border Olympics

LAREDO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin closed out its spring break road trip tying for 12th overall at the 2014 Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club. The Lumberjacks fired an 8-over 297 in round three, closing out the competitive event with a 37-over 901.
Sophomore Major Monzingo was the top SFA finisher, shooting a 1-over 73 in round one to close out the 54-hole event with an 8-over 224 (76-75-73), tying for 37th-place overall. Junior Bradley Phelps shot the low round of the tournament for the ‘Jacks, carding a 2-under 70 in the final round and finished with a 12-over 228 (75-83-70).
Sophomore Luke Sheehan finished third on the Lumberjack scorecard with a 13-over 229 (78-75-76), one shot ahead of junior Blake Pugh’s 14-over 230 (75-75-80). Redshirt freshman Baxter Ward closed out the SFA scorecard with an 18-over 234 (81-75-78).
SFA closed out the 54-hole event tied with Southland Conference rival Sam Houston State as the duo both finished three shots back of McNeese State and Air Force (34-over 898), both of which tied for 10th in the team standings. The ‘Jacks were four shots behind Northern Colorado (33-over 897), which finished ninth.
Host Houston rallied to capture the team title, shooting 8-under over the final 18 holes to finish with a 6-under 858, one shot better than runner-up Oklahoma (5-under 859). Baylor (1-under 863) finished third with Louisiana-Monroe (15-over 879) and UT-San Antonio (19-over 883) rounding out the top-five.
After competing in two tournaments spanning six days, SFA will take a nine-day hiatus before heading to Little Rock, Ark., competing in the Arkansas-Little Rock First Tee Classic. The 54-hole event gets underway on Monday, March 24th, before wrapping up on Tuesday, March 25th.
