'Jacks Rally from Slow Start at UALR
March 25, 2013
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team quickly rebounded from a slow start Monday at the UALR/First Tee Classic in Little Rock, Ark. The 'Jacks finished the opening round sitting 11th of 11 teams, but finished the day shooting a 296 in the second round to climb to third heading into Tuesday final round. The Lumberjacks opened the day with a 322 on the 7,326-yard, par-72 Chenal Country Club course, but rallied in the second round to shoot the lowest second-round score of the day.
After their first-round struggles, SFA finished the day with three players tied for the team-low score. Although senior Mitchell McLeroy was well off his normal pace, he rallied to sit among the team leaders, along with sophomore Blake Pugh and freshman Bradley Phelps. Pugh fired a one-over 73 in the second round, while Phelps shot a two over. The SFA trio is currently tied for 12th with a 155.
Freshman Luke Sheehan is only two strokes back of the SFA leaders with a 157. He is tied for 22nd overall. Classmate Major Monzingo was the only Lumberjack to not close out the day by improving on his opening round score. He is currently tied for 32nd overall with a 79-81 - 160.
The Lumberjacks enter the final round only six strokes back of the leaders, tournament-host UALR, and Abilene Christian. SFA is slated to tee off the final round of the Classic Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. The 'Jacks will be paired with UALR and ACU.
