April 3, 2012
VICTORIA, Texas - Junior Mitchell McLeroy fired a nine-under 207 to win the 2012 Jim West Intercollegiate in Victoria, Texas Tuesday afternoon. McLeroy, who trailed by a stroke entering the final round of play, bested the second-round leader by 11 strokes in the final round of action. The Lumberjacks followed McLeroy's lead carding a 284-296-283 - 863 to climb a spot and finish second overall.
"We got off to a really good start, and continued to play well the whole week," said head coach Trey Schroeder. "The important thing is that we never really lost any strokes down the stretch. Our performance here is consistent with what we have done over the course of the past several weeks.
"Mitchell was strong in all three rounds. Garrett (Driver) shot a 63 in the final round, but it never bothered Mitchell. He played with confidence all week, and always made the shots when he really needed them. He just went out and made it look easy," added Schroeder.
Senior Stetson McMillan was also in the hunt for the individual title finishing only three strokes off McLeroy's pace. McMillan was third overall with a three-round score of 69-71-70 - 210 to finish tied for third on the 6,870-yard, par-72 course.
Freshman Blake Pugh posted his strongest round of the week with a one-under 71, to finish tied for 26th (72-77-71 - 220). Senior Michael Smith also rallied on the final day of competition with an even par. Smith carded a 76-78-72 - 226 to finish tied for 50th overall. Freshman Cody Wing rounded out the SFA scoring with a 238 to place 66th.
SFA returns to action Sunday when they travel to Monroe, La., to compete in the ULM/Wallace Jones Invitational.
