SFA Tied For Fourth at SLC Championships

McKINNEY, Texas – Stephen F. Austin is tied for fourth through the opening 18 holes of the 2014 Southland Conference Championships as the Lumberjacks post an 11-over 299.
SFA was paced by junior Blake Pugh, who fired a 1-over 73 to sit tied for seventh among the individual standings through round one. Redshirt freshman Baxter Ward is one shot off Pugh’s pace, carding a 2-over 74 and currently sits tied for 10th overall.
Junior Bradley Phelps and sophomore Major Monzingo both finished with a 4-over 76 through the opening day at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club as the duo is tied for 18th in the individual standings. Sophomore Luke Sheehan struggled in round one, shooting a 10-over 82 to round out the SFA scorecard.
Playing on a comfortable day in McKinney, SFA sits in a good position as it continues its quest for an SLC title. The ‘Jacks are currently tied with Abilene Christian for fourth, leading sixth-place Lamar (12-over 300) by one stroke while holding a five-shot advantage over seventh-place Houston Baptist (17-over 305).
Sam Houston State, which played alongside SFA in round one, currently holds the team lead with a 2-over 290, sitting six shots ahead of second-place Central Arkansas (8-over 296). Southeastern Louisiana (9-over 297) is two strokes ahead of both SFA and ACU, occupying third-place.
Tuesday’s second round gets underway at 8 a.m. as SFA will tee off from hole one, playing with Lamar and Abilene Christian. Sheehan will be the first to tee off for the ‘Jacks, leading up to Pugh’s tee time at 8:32 a.m. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com with full results posted at SFAJacks.com as they become available.
