McKINNEY, Texas - Stephen F. Austin closes out the 2013-14 season by tying for third at the 2014 Southland Conference Championships at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club. The Lumberjacks post a 34-over 898 over the 54-hole event, marking the `Jacks' best finish since placing third in 2003.
SFA began the day in second place, just 10 shots back of leader Sam Houston State. But the `Jacks struggled over the final 18 holes, shooting an 18-over 306 and allowing Southeastern Louisiana to surpass them in the team standings while Central Arkansas pulled even.
Junior Bradley Phelps emerged as the top golfer for SFA, carding a 3-over 75 in round three and finishing tied for eighth overall with a 5-over 221 (76-70-75). Phelps notches the fourth top-10 finish of his Lumberjack career and third this season.
Redshirt freshman Baxter Ward had the low round of the day for the `Jacks, shooting a 1-over 73, and finished in sole possession of 14th with a 7-over 223 (74-76-73) for his fourth top-20 finish of the season. Junior Blake Pugh struggled with a 10-over 82 on Wednesday but still finished with a 12-over 228 (73-73-82), tying for 19th overall. It is the eighth top-20 finish of the season for Pugh and the 19th of his SFA career.

Sam Houston State captured the team title with a 14-over 878, besting the Lion by six strokes.
SFA now awaits its fate to see if any of its golfers will be invited to compete in the 2014 NCAA Regional Tournament being held May 15-17. Regardless, the `Jacks closed out a memorable season as SFA notched four top-five finishes with one team tournament title. The `Jacks' SLC tournament team consisted of two juniors, two sophomores and a redshirt freshman, giving SFA a lot of key experience heading into 2014-15.
