Lumberjacks One Shot Off the Lead After Round Two in Arkansas

EL DORADO, Ark. – Stephen F. Austin finds itself right in the mix of competing for the team title as the Lumberjacks are tied for second, one stroke off the pace at the Duck Commander Intercollegiate. SFA posted a 10-over 298 in round two and is at 16-over 592 after 36 holes, sitting among a three-way tie for second.

Entering the day in first among the team standings, the Lumberjacks slipped one spot after adding four shots to their opening round total. SFA slipped one stroke back of tournament-leader Little Rock (15-over 591) and is tied with both Arkansas State and host Louisiana-Monroe for second.

The bright spot of the day for SFA was the play of senior Major Monzingo who fired a 2-under 70 to move into a tie for third in the individual standings. The 70 marks the sixth par-or-better round of the season for Monzingo who is at even-par 144 through 36 holes, five shots back of the tournament leader.

Senior Cory Brown also tallied an under-par round, shooting a 1-under 71 and moving into a tie for 11th overall with sophomore teammate Angelo Leyvani, who shot a 3-over 75. The duo is at 4-over 148 through the first two rounds, four shots back of Monzingo for the team lead.

Junior Blake Stock is also among the individual top-20, tied for 18th with an 8-over 152. Stock added 12 strokes to his opening round 70, shooting a 10-over 82 in round two, slipping from second to 18th individually. Sophomore Jacob Hendrix rounds out the SFA competitors with a 17-over 161, registering an 11-over 83 in round two.

Tuesday’s final round should prove to be a four-way race for the tournament championship as the quartet has separated itself from the field. Oregon State (25-over 601) is in fifth, nine shots back of the ‘Jacks, Red Wolves and Warhawks, with UT-Arlington (29-over 605) in sixth overall. Southland Conference foe Southeastern Louisiana (32-over 608) is in seventh with Houston Baptist and Louisiana Tech (41-over 617) tied for eighth and Nicholls (45-over 621) sitting 10th.

The final round of the Duck Commander Intercollegiate gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. SFA will be in the top group teeing off from holes one through three, playing with Little Rock and Arkansas State in the final round pairings.
