EL DORADO, Ark. – Stephen F. Austin closed out the fall portion of its schedule with a strong final push, earning runner-up honors at the 2016 Duck Commander Intercollegiate. The Lumberjacks posted a 17-over 305 over the final round, closing out the 54-hole event with a 33-over 897.

Entering the day in a three-way tie for second, SFA distanced itself over the final 18 holes, pulling away from both Little Rock and Louisiana-Monroe. The Lumberjacks finished two shots back of tournament champion Arkansas State’s 31-over 895, besting Little Rock (36-over 900) by three shots and finishing four shots better than host Louisiana-Monroe (37-over 901).
Senior Cory Brown notched the low round of the day for SFA, carding a 2-over 74 to finish tied for sixth in the individual standings with a 6-over 222. It is the second top-10 finish of Brown’s career, two tournaments after his career-best fourth-place showing at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate.
Brown was joined in the individual top 10 by sophomore Angelo Leyvani and senior Major Monzingo, both of which tied for 10th overall with an 8-over 224. Leyvani carded a 4-over 76 in round three with Monzingo adding an 8-over 80, giving SFA three top-10 finishers for the first time this season.
Leyvani registered the fifth top-10 showing of his Lumberjack career and his second of the season, doing so in just 13 collegiate events. For Monzingo, he now has three top-10 finishes as he matched Leyvani with his second top-10 showing in 2016-17.
Junior Blake Stock registered a top-20 finish for SFA, tying for 18th overall with a 10-over 228. Stock carded a 4-over 76 in round two, shaving six strokes off his second round total, posting the first top-20 finish of his Lumberjack career.
Sophomore Jacob Hendrix closed out the SFA competitors in Arkansas, shooting a 7-over 79 in round three and finishing with a 24-over 240, tying for 44th overall.
SFA led all teams through the three-day event with 166 total pars, 13 better than Little Rock’s 153. The ‘Jacks also finished second in par-four scoring, shooting 48-over for the tournament with a 4.32 average.
Brown finished third among all players in par three scoring, shooting 2-under for the event, while ranking sixth in par-four scoring at 5-over, one shot better than Leyvani. Stock was the top Lumberjack performer on the par-fives, shooting 1-under for the week.
Following the top-four, Oregon State (40-over 904) finished fifth, followed by UT-Arlington (48-over 912) and Southland Conference foe Southeastern Louisiana (52-over 916). Two other SLC teams competed as Houston Baptist (70-over 934) placed ninth with Nicholls (72-over 936) finishing 10th overall.
The conclusion of the Duck Commander Intercollegiate marks the end of a successful fall season for SFA as the Lumberjacks registered top-10 finishes in all four events. As a team, the ‘Jacks posted a 294.17 scoring average through the first four tournaments of the year as Leyvani hold the individual lead with a 73.25 scoring average.
SFA will return to the links in February, traveling to Palm Desert, California, for the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, being held February 17-19, 2017.
