Stephen F. Austin resumes its 2016-17 schedule this weekend, competing in the first event of the spring season on the west coast. The Lumberjacks head to Palm Desert, California, for the 2017 Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate February 17-19.
The 2017 Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate will be held at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California, with the par-72 course measuring 7,322 yards. The 54-hole tournament will feature three rounds of 18 holes, beginning with set tee times from holes one and 10 at 9 a.m. CT each day.
SFA will be one of 20 teams competing in the event in California, featuring a handful of some of the nation's top teams. Six teams currently sit in the top-100 in the latest Golfstat rankings, including Texas Tech (No. 5), Oregon (No. 10), Colorado (No. 24), Kansas (No. 34), TCU (No. 66) and UNC-Wilmington (No. 75). The Lumberjacks are the lone Southland Conference school in the field and are one of four schools from the Lone Star state making the trek west, joined by the Red Raiders, Horned Frogs and UT-Arlington. The remaining 12 teams include CSU-Fullerton, Denver, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Little Rock, Loyola Marymount, Nebraska, Old Dominion, Oral Roberts, South Dakota State, Southern Utah and UC-Riverside.
Head coach Trey Schroeder's lineup at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate will consist of three seniors, a sophomore and a freshman, all of which saw significant playing time in the fall:
Last Time Out
Stephen F. Austin capped a strong fall season with a runner-up finish at the Duck Commander Intercollegiate in El Dorado, Arkansas, held October 30 - November 1, 2016. The Lumberjacks posted a 33-over 897 for the event, finishing two shots back of Arkansas State for the tournament title. Four Lumberjacks finished among the individual top-10, led by Cory Brown tying for sixth (6-over 222) with Angelo Leyvani and Major Monzingo both tying for 10th (8-over 224). Blake Stock tied for 18th as well with a 12-over 228 in leading SFA to their fourth top-10 team showing of the year.
On the Road Again
This weekend's event will be the Lumberjacks' fifth tournament of the 2016-17 season, all of which will have been in different states. Ironically, none of those tournaments have taken place on Texas soil as the `Jacks have traveled to Louisiana, Kansas, New Mexico and Arkansas this season. Following this week's trip to California, SFA will play five of their next six events in the Lone Star state, leading up to the Southland Conference Championship in McKinney at the end of April.
SFA competed in four events in the fall season, registering a top-10 finish in each outing. The Lumberjacks posted a team scoring average of 294.17 over the four tournaments, finishing second at the Duck Commander Intercollegiate in El Dorado, Arkansas, and fourth at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate in Overland Park, Kansas. Six Lumberjacks posted top-10 tournament finishes, including two each from seniors Cory Brown and Major Monzingo and an additional two from sophomore Angelo Leyvani. The trio also each posted sub-74 scoring averages, led by a 73.25 from Leyvani, a 73.42 from Monzingo and Brown's 73.56.
Following this weekend's trek to California, the Lumberjacks will play in their first event in the state of Texas, making the short trip south to Houston. SFA will compete in the 2017 Colin Montgomerie Spring Invitational, hosted by Houston Baptist, February 27-28 at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring.
