Sonterra North Golf Club – San Antonio, Texas
Stephen F. Austin begins its spring break swing in San Antonio, competing in the Incarnate Word James Litz Memorial Invitational on March 10-11.
The Incarnate word James Litz Memorial will be held at The Club at Sonterra North course, a par-72, 7,070-yard course located on the north side of San Antonio. The opening two rounds will get underway at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning, followed by the final 18 holes beginning Tuesday morning.
SFA is one of just five teams competing in the event, joining Southland Conference foe host Incarnate Word. Our Lady of the Lake, Murray State College and South Texas College round out the five-team field.
SFA will bring six competitors to the Alamo City this week, led by junior Blake Pugh, who boasts the lowest team scoring average on the season (72.95). He will be joined by fellow junior Bradley Phelps, fresh off his third-place finish at the Moe O’Brien Intercollegiate, sophomores Luke Sheehan and Major Monzingo and redshirt freshman Baxter Ward. Junior Cody Wing will also make the trip, competing as an individual.
Monday’s opening round could be threatened by thunderstorms as rain is expected to last a significant part of the day with temperatures in the low 60s. Tuesday is forecasted to be a much better day for golf with sunny skies prevailing and temperatures expected to climb into the upper 70s to low 80s.
Last Time Out
SFA is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Moe O’Brien Intercollegiate in Lake Charles, La., on February 24-25. The Lumberjacks sat in third-place heading into Tuesday’s final round but slipped a spot to fourth, finishing one stroke back of Incarnate Word. Blake Phelps posted the best finish of his career, tying for third in the overall individual standings, with Baxter Ward finishing eighth, Blake Pugh tying for 13th overall and Luke Sheehan finishing 15th.
After two days of competition in San Antonio, SFA will head to south Texas to compete in the Border Olympics, hosted by the University of Houston. The two-day event will be held Friday, March 14th and Saturday, March 15th, at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas.
